A true craftsman: Falcon Pine Kitchens and Interior Joinery/Furniture of North Bridge Halifax West Yorkshire
10th June 2020
Michael Bartle set up a joinery business when he was just 20 years old, based in his parents garden shed where he spent his days handcrafting pine bureaux which he sold to a company in Harrogate. He gradually diversified into making a wider range of products and needed more space so moved to his first shop in Salterhebble, which has since been demolished for road widening. He then moved 20 years ago to a 4 storey cavernous building on North Bridge Halifax. This shop may look small from the outside but inside it hides a wealth of historic architectural features. Narrow staircases connect each level but it is the basement which is the most unexpected. Here are the underground workshops, which are inside the arches of the iron North Bridge itself, with the original vaulted red brick ceilings and the cobbled floors remain in parts too. This would be a wonderful building to discover more about its history of use too but we know it was a hair dressers in the 1970’s and then an antique shop before becoming Michaels’ business base. Here Michael sells and restores pine furniture, specialising in internal and external doors and original and replica door furniture. The stock of over 2500 original antique pine doors is really impressive, all designs and sizes. He also makes bespoke fitted kitchens and wardrobes from new and reclaimed timber as well as bookcases, kitchen tables and free standing furniture too. Michael has stripping tanks in the basement to strip doors and furniture and he also provides a restoration service if required.
We are so pleased that we found Falcon Pine by chance really as we were in the early stages of the restoration of Dyer’s Cottage in late 2014. We needed a craftsman to dip and restore a pair of old painted pine cupboard doors from an alcove next to the fireplace and refit them as wardrobes upstairs. We also needed some honest advice about our 5 internal doors, none of which were a standard size and all were in a very well used condition. He managed to save and restore 2 and sourced 3 matching replacements which all look as if they have been there forever. He is a pefectionist and insisted on providing the hinges, door furniture and fitted them all for us. We are so pleased with the finished result.
Falcon Pine is a true family business involving Michael, Tracey and his son at the moment as the other staff are furloughed but we are so pleased to be able to give them our support.
